Type 98 Shin Gunto Japanese Army Officer's Katana Sword made during WWII. This sword is very original and was likely never pulled apart since WWII with blade and koshirae all matching.  The blade is in good condition with the hamon (Clay Tempering) clearly visible in Nioi based Gunome style.  The blade is folded in the traditional style with Itame Hada (grain structure) clearly visible.  There is some scratches on the blade and small patches of rust here and there but still presents well.  The signed nakago(Tang) is in good original condition with no evidence of cleaning or tampering with a clear signature, "I-Do Hide-Toshi".  HideToshi is listed in Slough's "Modern Japanese Swordsmiths" and was known for making Low to Medium Grade Gendaito and Showato.  The tsuka ito (Handle Binding) is generally tight and secure with only the mekugi pin location being damaged and loose.  The samegawa (rayskin) is unusually simulated on this piece which is quite rare.  All the fittings are of good quality with the saya (Scabbard) locking catch in good working order.  The seppa are all original and fit well with only a little movement which is common due to the timber of the tsuka shrinking. Almost all the paint on the saya has flaked off with time and there a some dents and scraches but it is matching.
