Type 98 Shin Gunto Japanese Army Officer's Katana Sword signed "Koa Isshin Mantetsu, dated spring 1942. The mei (signature) reads "Koa Isshin, Mantetsu Saku Kore"(Devolp Asia by One Mind)(Mantetsu Respectfully Made This) and is dated "Showa Mizunoe Uma Haru"(Year of the Horse, Showa Period, on a day in Spring(1942)). The blade is in generally fair condition with the hamon (Clay Tempering) visible in the Suguha style of Mantetsu blades. The nakago(Tang) is in good condition with with a good clear signature. The spine is marked with a serial number, RA 385. The copper habaki (Scabbard Grip) seems to be original with the original gold wash still present. The tsuka appears to be original to the blade as does the rarer pierced tsuba, with the ito (Handle Binding) tight and secure, with samegawa (rayskin) still present and intact. The saya is in generally good condition with some wear and tear, but like the rest of the sword appears to be original to the blade. Overall in good condition and a nice piece to display in ones home.
Mantetsu blades were prized during the war for their high quality steel and toughness, and have become quite collectable over the years. I have included some page excerpts from "Slough's Modern Japanese Swordsmiths" with information regarding Ko-Isshin Mantetsu blades. Much information is also available online on the subject, and there is hours of entertainment for the avid researcher.
