The bearded axe was known to have been used as early as the 6th century AD and was used not only as a weapon but as a tool.  The beard was useful for pulling an opponents shield or weapon out of the way but also to hold the haft closely behind the edge for shaving wood.  Also the hook afforded less mass in the head overall with a longer cutting edge.  This example features a blunt carbon steel blade and hardwood shaft for display and COS Play use.
