The type 32 Japanese Army sword (also known as the 1899 Pattern) was in production from 1899 until 1936 and were produced in two models. The "Ko" was the first in the series and was produced for NCO's and soldiers of the Cavalry. The second of the series was the "Otsu" which was for NCO's, soldiers in the military police and the transportaion corps. Also all Master Sergents in the infantry, the engineers, and the artillery.
Both models were produced at the Tokyo Arsenal and are usually stamped on the knuckle bow with the Tokyo Arsenal three cannon ball mon. Some are stamped with dates usually denoting the year and sometimes the month.
This genuine authentic type 32 Japanese Army sword of the "Otsu" variation is in fair original condition with some old edge nicks and signs of sharpening. The scabbard is in original condition with an even layer of surface rust over the full length with the serial number obscured by the rust. The end of the scabbard nearest the drag has be crushed but does not effect the operation of the sword entering the scabbard. The blade is in better condition and has the serial number 55991 (pre 1910?) stamped onto the ricasso of the blade. The knuckle bow like the scabbard has uniform rust throughout and displays the Tokyo Arsenal, four cannon ball stamp and two "Inspection" stamps? The timber grip is mostly intact with a little timber missing near the pommel end.
A good starter sword for anyone beginning a collection of antique swords and an appreciating asset. It is advised that the rust is not removed and that the sword is preserved in "As Found" condition.
