Paul Chen's Tinker Early Medieval Swords are single-hand Oakeshott Type XII pieces, with sharp and blunt versions with identical handling characteristics. The sharp sword is fullered for about two thirds of its length, with a flattened diamond section out towards the tip. The blade is forged from 5160 spring steel and then marquenched for a more precise heat treatment. The cruciform hilt is strong plated steel and pommel fitted with a hex nut for ease of blade removal.

5160 Steel Information.
5160 has achieved an excellent reputation for its toughness and resilience, particularly in larger knife blades and sword blades, where shock absorption is a requirement. Careful heat treating of a 5160 blade can produce a hard edge section and a softer core, an excellent characteristic in hacking blades.5160 Steel Composition: 0.61C 0.94Mn 0.88Cr
